Election Day Weather Outlook
UPDATED 7 AM EST, November 4, 2008
By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Chad Merrill
Just as voters hit the polls today, heavy rain and snow will spread across the Intermountain West while a low pressure area along the Atlantic Coast produces soggy weather. Meanwhile, high pressure will squeeze through the Plains, providing nothing but sunshine and warm weather.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Rachel Peterson has the latest in her exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
Rain, snow and wind will make for a rough Election Day for residents casting their ballots in the West. While an inch of rain is possible through the lower elevations of the Intermountain West, up to a foot of fresh powder will fall in the highest mountain peaks. Temperatures will be stuck in the 30s and 40s for the mountains while 40s and 50s can be expected in the lower elevations in the West and the Pacific Northwest.
Warmer temperatures and calmer weather will be on the ticket across the Southwest. Highs will rebound into the middle 70s through southern New Mexico and Arizona while middle 60s will round out the day in southern California. A few scattered showers could dot the landscape here.
The optimal voting weather will be found through the Plains, Ohio and Tennessee valleys as well as the Great Lakes today. Here, temperatures will range through the upper 70s and lower 80s with breezy southerly winds. A large part of the Deep South and Gulf Coast will also be dry with mild conditions. Temperatures here will flirt with the 80 degree mark.
Soggy weather will remain along the Southeast and southern Mid-Atlantic Coast today. Afternoon highs will only make it into the 50s and 60s. Voters along the Atlantic Coast from Washington, D.C. to Charleston, S.C., along with Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C., will need to keep an umbrella handy when hitting the polls today.
Meanwhile, more pleasant temperatures and partly cloudy skies will greet voters from the northern Mid-Atlantic to New England with highs topping out in the 60s to middle 50s in northern Maine.
